In Marleybone there is a dog named Professor Challenger.
Professor Challenger was the lead scientist in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's The Lost World

  • Valencia (Some town in Florida)
  • Polaris (Some company as far as I know sells golf carts)
  • Cool Ranch (Doritos)

Actually, Polaris is the name of "The North Star", a star above the North Pole.

There are quite a few references to Treasure Island in the spiral, so many I might miss a few.
Ensign Livsey; a reference to Doctor Livesey the ship's doctor.
Captain Gun; a reference to Ben Gunn a pirate who was marooned on the treasure island.
Admiral Benbow Tavern; Admiral Benbow Inn owned by Jim Hawkins and his mother, also the place where the whole story starts.
Blind Mew; Blind Pew the pirate that gives Billy Bones the black spot.
Strong John Silver; Kinda obvious, Long John Silver.

I missed in my last post, Flint a rat on Skull Island near the shops. Captain Flint was the pirate captain what buried the treasure in Treasure Island in the first place.

Naturally, every book is based off of a specific source.

Book 1: Treasure Island

Book 2: Heart of Darkness

Book 3: Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

Book 4: Unknown

Book 5: Wild West

Book 6: Zorro

Book 7: The Duke of Death

Book 8: That old song called Desperately Seeking Sally, or A New Hope.

Book 9: Back to the Wild West.

Book 10: Treasure Island with a ghostly twist, or maybe the Undead Gunslinger.

Book 11: Japanese and Chinese culture, including Kabuki dancing and lots of other stuff.

Book 12: Even more Japanese and Chinese culture.

Book 13: Another A New Hope, or maybe something else.

Book 14: I don't know, maybe Greek Mythology.
Book 12 is definitely inspired by an anime called Dragon Ball Z.
Another anime that has big influence in the story line is the very popular pirate anime, One Piece. The Yum-Yum fruit comes directly from Luffy's Gum-Gum fruit.

I did'nt think anything of the Gortez, as in the real Cortez coming across, I just thought it was too obvious as in not an easter egg.

There is a ship with a cutthroat shark, between Skull Island and the path to Puerto Mico.
On that ship, the mini boss' name is Mack The Shark.
My guess is, this is based off the character from the song Mack The Knife.

Here is part of the lyrics for proof.

Oh, the shark, babe, has such teeth, dear
And it shows them pearly white
Just a jackknife has old MacHeath, babe
And he keeps it, out of sight
Ya know when that shark bites with his teeth, babe.

The song I am familiar with is sung by Bobby Darin.

But the actual song dates back to 1928.

In the first promotion quest for Barnabus, you have to defeat a ship called The Orca.
The ship's captain is a shark called The Mighty Quint.

I think this might be based on the song The Mighty Quinn.
First release by Manfred Mann.
Written by Bob Dylan, who then released it later.

The attacks it uses, plus the ship's name. all would indicate it.

Part of the lyrics are as follows:

Everybody's building ships and boats
Some are building monuments, others jotting down notes
Everybody's in despair, every girl and boy
But when Quinn the Eskimo gets here
Everybody's gonna jump for joy

Actually, I have been proven wrong on this.
It turns out, it is a "Jaws" reference.
T. S. Quint (Robert Shaw), was the captain of "The Orca".

In Marleybone during the Isle of Fetch arc, you can get a companion called Private Mills (like General Mills) then you go in to fight the Kurgahs (who are tigers) in a quest called They're Grrrrreat! Don't you just love frosted flakes?

Maximus Tudius in Aquila, I can't believe KI put this one in, but it had me laughing for quite a while.
A very nice reference to Monty Python's Life of Brian.

Hmmm, I would have thought Underdog was from the cartoon Underdog. Shoeshine boy until a hero is needed then "Here I come to save the daaaay" "There's no need to fear, Underdog is here". Eh, you get the idea.

Remember remember the 5th of November,
The Gunpowder treason and plot;
I know of no reason
Why the Gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot!
Guy Fawkes and his companions
Did the scheme contrive,
To blow the King and Parliament
All up alive.
Threescore barrels, laid below.
To prove old England's overthrow.
But, by God's providence, him they catch.
With a dark lantern, lighting a match!

Dixie Chicks. I was oh-so happy when I saw that. I love the Dixie Chicks!

I cried, never gonna hold the hand of another guy
To young for him they told her
Waitin' for the love of a travelin' soldier
Our love will never end
Waitin' for the soldier to come back again
Never more to be alone when the letter said
A soldier's comin' home

I love that song. Thanks KI for making the band a reference!

In Bonnie Anne's 3rd promotion when you are looking for the naptha barrels in the dry docks, the second barrel you look in is, to quote the great Ratbeard,

"Ughh, this one i filled with custard and fishfingers. Who would eat that?"

This is a reference to Doctor who from season 5 on, Fishfingers and Custard is the Doctor's favorite meal. there also is an entire side quest in Zafaria about it, where you have to get the PROFESSOR to get the COSMIC CALASPER aka the doctor the sonic screwdriver, and you find him next to a phone box in marlybone

I'm thinking Lucy Sterling might be more from "Lucy Sterling Silver".
Having to do with jewelry.
Underdog, I think might be a play from the old cartoon series back in the late 60's and early 70's.

I noticed that Captain Swing sounded a lot like Mark Hamill's Joker.
From the Batman cartoons of the 90's.

In Blood Shoals, there a vendor for ship parts.
His name is Nephew Jethro.

Does this remind anyone of "The Beverly Hillbillies" ?
