Spiral Date

I was looking at the Captain's Log and it had the Spiral Date in it. What is Spiral Date and how is it calculated?

The spiral Date looks like a version of the captain's log in the star trek universe. Captain James Tiberius Kirk first used this type of date in the Star Trek Original series then Captain Jean-Luc Picard of the next generation kept up with it. Correct me if I am wrong but it became a universal way for every world to use so that all worlds can keep up with it. I am wondering if the stardate originated on Vulcan and Earth made use of the system.
